windfall: a sudden, unexpected piece of good fortune

Off to Pittsburgh for a family weekend. I think Pittsburgh is the most beautiful city in the world. I haven't seen every city in the world, but my son who has worked on every continent and has seen every state of the U.S., agrees with me. There is this kind of balance in Pittsburgh--it has city entertainment including the very best cultural expressions (orchestra, museums, plays, and more), two huge parks inside the city limits, the Strip district, Squirrel Hill, the tightly squeezed- in home of the University of Pittsburgh and one of the finest hospitals in the world. But suddenly something happens when you walk down a street and turn left instead of right; you're seeing the raw topography of the place, dramatic hills and ravines and sharp rocks sticking out at odd angles. No developer could come to Pittsburgh armed with a bulldozer and even things out to build shoddy, expensive buildings.

I live in the country now and there's a different kind of drama here.

I've included a picture of the Smithfield Street Bridge. I love this bridge. You're on Smithfield Street in downtown, start crossing over the Monongahela, come face-to-face with a fancy shopping area; and there is Mount Washington which you can climb via the Incline. The most beautiful city in the world.
