When I was in first grade in John Minadeo Elementary School, our classes were brought to "Room 4," the assembly room, periodically, to get shots in our upper arms. I may be wrong about this, but I don't remember ever being informed about what we were doing there, what the injections were, and who was involved and why. Much, much later I learned that the childred in the Pittsburgh Public Schools were involved in Dr. Jonas Salk's great experiment-to put an end to polio. He was doing his research at the University of Pittsburgh.
